Dental Implants

A dental implant is actually a replacement for the root or roots of a tooth. Like tooth roots, dental implants are secured in the jawbone and are not visible once surgically placed. After the implant integrates to your bone, it acts as a new "root" or a support to replace your missing tooth. They are made of titanium, which is lightweight, strong and biocompatible (It is not rejected by the body). Titanium’s special property of fusing to bone, called osseointegration is the biological basis of dental implant success.
For this procedure to be sucessful, there must be enough bone in the jaw. The bone has to be strong enough to hold and support the implant. If there is not enough bone, it may need to be added with a procedure called bone augmentation or bone grafting. In addition, natural teeth and supporting tissues near where the implant will be placed must be in good health.
